This is a unique opportunity for an exceptional person with 3+ years’ experience in product design / development roles.  You will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, DC and AC products and embedded control systems for extreme environment LED lighting.

To be considered, the candidate must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Knowledge and experience within the various levels of software development from firmware to mobile applications.
  • Proficiency in DC circuit design and circuit board layout (including high-frequency switching circuits and embedded control), PCB CAD software (Altium preferred).
  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, Masters strongly preferred and a minimum of 3 years of related experience.

Mechanical Engineer I

Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineer I is responsible for the design, development, documentation, test, and evaluation activities for components, sub-assemblies, and finished goods products that meet the cost, performance and timeliness requirements defined within ESG’s Product Planning Process (P3 Process).  This person will be tasked to investigate, develop, and implement new technologies, tools and processes, and must solve problems through original thinking and ingenuity.

Essential Responsibilities and Functions

  • Design and develop products, assemblies and components that meet or exceed ESG’s stringent quality, cost, performance and schedule requirements.
  • Create new vehicle-specific parts and test fit parts onto cars, truck, and other vehicles.
  • Disassemble and measure vehicles with hand tools or use of 3D scanner.
  • Fit check parts onto various vehicles/applications.
  • Support Label Modification projects as defined within ESG’s P3 Processes. 
  • Review and approve mechanical and finished goods drawings.
  • Quickly resolve engineering and technical issues. 
  • Write assembly instructions (AI’s), work instructions, and equipment maintenance procedures. 
  • Develop production jigs, assembly fixtures and crimping tools for domestic and international manufacturing. 
  • Complete finished goods first article reports (FARs). 
  • Create Control Plan, Process FMEA, and Process Flow Diagram and PPAP documentation. 
  • Perform finished goods product verification, qualification and validation testing. 
  • Incorporate fundamentals of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA).
  • Be a key contributor in developing and maintaining detailed and accurate Bills of Materials (BOM’s) and Approved Vendor Lists (AVL’s) for sub-assemblies and finished goods products. 
  • Be a key contributor in ensuring integrity of mechanical design and product development processes. 
  • Analyze, evaluate, and recommend system improvements that will reduce product design cycle times.
  • Facilitate consistent and predictable alarm and light production, including outsourcing PCA testers, light output testers, flash rate testers, speaker sweep stations and alarm test boxes. 
  • Participate in Component Part Qualification (CPQ) process for speakers, drivers, LEDs and mechanical parts.
  • Actively participate in ESG’s Change Request (CR/ECN/DCN) process.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications to Succeed

Required

  • B.S.M.E. degree, or equivalent experience.
  • SolidWorks training or experience (modeling, assembly, and drawing creation).
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal, e.g. ability to prepare, present and discuss project related plans, requirements, test results, etc. in a team-based work environment. 
  • Comprehensive, working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Project (intermediate to advanced skill level preferred in Excel). 

Desired

  • SolidWorks surfacing modeling and sheet metal design.
  • Experience working in an install bay, upfitting vehicles or installing aftermarket parts/electronics onto vehicles.
  • Experience rapid prototyping parts, fixtures and products, both subtractive (machined) and additive (grown).
  • Understanding of industry document control practices and ability to adhere to ESG’s documentation processes. 
  • Packaging design education, training and/or experience, including corrugated cardboard POP boxes. 
  • Good understanding of LED, speaker and driver theories of operation. 
  • Good understanding of electrical and electronic systems and components.
  • Ability to set-up, record and analyze acoustic measurements (SPL, frequency, etc.). 
  • Ability to set-up, record, and analyze light measurements (color, luminous flux and intensity, flash rate). 
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, production yield metrics (process capability, Cpk, Gauge RandR) and production test procedures (alarms and lights preferred). 
  • Good understanding of test techniques for product validation, product verification and Design of Experiments (DOE).

This is a unique opportunity for an exceptional person with 10+ years’ experience in product design / development roles. You will contribute to design activities for LED lighting, joining our design team of engineers and designers taking concepts from the white board to the production floor. You will manage mechanical fit/dimension/tolerances for both as-designed and off-the-shelf components. You will contribute to the design and production of tools, tests, processes and fixtures related to production.

To be considered, the candidate must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Exceptionally high level of creativity, capable of conceptualizing and communicating many solutions to unique and challenging design problems.
  • Proficiency designing components for injection molding, diecasting and machining manufacturing processes
  • Extensive experience with structural, thermal and fluid dynamic calculations and their finite element simulations for the optimization of products.
  • Experience stepping through an assembly and calculating stack-up and fit tolerances.
  • Excellent analytical problem solving skills where problems are very unusual and challenging.
  • Excellent project management skills, and the ability to establish and maintain timelines with external suppliers and internal team members
  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Masters strongly preferred and a minimum of 10 years of related experience.

  • High proficiency using Solidworks including best practices for documentation of designs.
  • Experience in leading projects and teams.
  • Optical design experience
  • Knowledge of commercially available adhesives and coatings.
  • A working knowledge of commonly available plastic resins and casting metal alloys (in particular, aluminum and stainless steel) and the advantages, limitations, and disadvantages of each.
  • Experience in shop trades (machining and general fabrication/modeling of metal, wood, plastic, etc) and a willingness to utilize these skills in the generation of physical proof-of-concept prototypes and models.
  • Familiarity with modeling and prototyping processes, equipment and techniques such as SLA/SLS/FDM, CNC machining, resin casting, etc.
  • Experience working in a very fast paced, responsive, deadline oriented environment.
