Material Buyer/Planner I


JOB SUMMARY

This position performs a variety of routine and/or moderate dollar value buying/purchasing tasks involving materials, supplies or services as assigned, with responsibility for maintenance of excellent supplier relationships that support the reliable procurement objectives of the operation.  The incumbent is empowered to act as an agent of the company within established policies and procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

  • Executes the purchasing of a common group of commodities so that the quality, cost and delivery objectives of the operation are successfully supported.
  • Researches and recommends to Manager additions to maintain and augment the supplier base.
  • Assure that contracts for commodities are advantageous to the company’s long-term profitability.
  • Assure adequate purchasing specifications by early supplier and engineering communications.
  • Researches and implements opportunities to reduce product cost and inventory investments.
  • Interprets material demands from sales orders, master schedule and forecast.
  • Prepares and awards purchase orders and/or procurement contracts based on the interpretation of the demand maintaining and/or improving cost quality and delivery performance.
  • Execute specific problem resolution actions in coordination with engineering, quality and manufacturing operations.
  • Represent the Purchasing department in project meetings and provide input / support to meet program goals.   
  • Negotiates and settles with suppliers regarding damage claims, rejections, losses, return of materials, over shipments, cancellations and engineering changes.
  • Coordinates with the Finance Department as required to resolve questions on suppliers' invoices.

Non-essential (if applicable)

  • May be required to develop or compile statistical information to support various projects that support purchasing functions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Computer proficiencies in business application software i.e., word processing, spreadsheet and database.
  • Comprehensive knowledge regarding automated MRP system (preferably Expandable software)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Ability to interface effectively with technical, administrative and operational communities.

Desired

  • APICS (CPIM) and/or NAPM (CPM) certification desirable.
